Updated: 3 days ago
Through her participation in the Oklahoma International Dance Festival, Tessa Fungo has been featured as an invited guest performer at SOLOCOREOGRAFICO Solo Dance Festival, hosted in Frankfurt, Germany.
Originally from La Cañada, California, Fungo attends the University of Oklahoma where she is currently a junior in the Modern Dance program. She studies under the direction of Austin Hartel, who is a professor of dance at the University of Oklahoma and the founder of the Oklahoma International Dance Festival.
“I’m so happy for Tessa and her work in OIDF’s intensive this summer opened the door for her with this wonderful opportunity,” said Hartel. “To be selected to perform as part of SOLOCOREOGRAFICO is an honor for her. I’m thrilled that she was chosen to represent OIDF with her artistry and beautiful dancing.”
Fungo participated in the Oklahoma International Dance Festival’s Online Intensive this past summer, where she took classes from Raffaele Irace, artistic director of SOLOCOREOGRAFICO Solo Dance Festival. At the end of the two-week online intensive, Irace asked Fungo to submit a dance performance solo to be presented online as part of the SOLOCOREOGRAFICO Solo Dance Festival: Frankfurt Edition.
“During the Oklahoma International Dance Festival, I fell in love with the work we were creating in Raffaele Irace’s class and was completely shocked to be called after the festival about this performance opportunity,” said Fungo. “To perform in an international festival while still in college is unbelievable, and I am incredibly honored. It gives me so much hope for the future and it is so inspiring for my art to be showcased alongside amazing international artists in SOLOCOREOGRAFICO.”
Fungo filmed her solo, “THE FINE LINE,” in Lone Wolf, Oklahoma, at the Quartz Mountain Resort Arts and Conference Center. It was choreographed by Fungo, using movement developed in Irace’s contemporary dance class for the Oklahoma International Dance Festival. The piece is set to music by Dominik Sherrer, and you can view the solo on Facebook here.
“Tessa is a talented, beautiful dancer, and she is able to express three very important things: the strength, the beauty, and the freedom of a dancing body,” said Irace. “This international collaboration is vital, and thanks to the cooperation between OIDF and SOLOCOREOGRAFICO Solo Dance Festival in Frankfurt, we can build a bridge for dance artists to explore themselves and the world through creativity.”
SOLOCOREOGRAFICO Solo Dance Festival: Frankfurt Edition runs October 5-10, 2020, and more information can be found at www.solocoreografico.com. The Oklahoma International Dance Festival will host an online winter intensive from January 4-9, 2021, and Irace is listed among the faculty who will be teaching classes.
